How to Dress in Morocco

Morocco has been on my bucket list for the longest time; one year and five months later in Spain and I finallyyy managed to hop over… it was everything I had expected and more. There is something about this beautiful country. The people, the hot scorching weather (that I love), their beautiful culture, the way locals dress and their way of life quickly made me realize that Marrakesh (where I stayed) is more than just a vacation spot for me.

Living in the States and its bubble for so long then moving across the world, I thought Europe had opened my eyes enough… until I walked through the streets of Marrakesh. How could life be so plain and yet so peaceful? How do people manage to smile, even to strangers, as if they don’t have a damn thing to worry about? How are the kids on street so cheerful with so little? People truly seemed happy. Life isn’t easy for them but simple and comfortable… that’s what they know. Isn’t that the ultimate goal in life? Why is it that in less developed places in the world the answer to life’s biggest question can be found yet the rest of us are going in circle in hopes of achieving what they’ve already achieved… contentment and peace.

Anyways, aside from my philosophical thoughts on the streets of Marrakesh, another thing that caught my eye was the way locals dressed. Marrakesh’s style definitely adds to the city’s colorful and vibrant vibes. Even though as a tourist/visitor you’re not obligated to cover up or follow the dress code, in my opinion, to feel and live the culture and most importantly out of respect, dressing appropriately in Morocco is a must.

Soo… How to play dress up?

  • Kaftan: The first thing you’ll notice when you go to town shopping is all the beautiful, colorful Kaftans. The ones that are sold in the souqs (bazaar AKA market) are obviously not the ones locals purchase but they’re still very pretty. You can bargain & purchase a decent one there or if you want to go all out you can go to the local shops & purchase a fancy one. Dress it up with slippers (babouche) or sandals, either way wearing a kaftan will make you feel fab!

  • Mid-dress | Scarf | Sandals: I made sure to pack middy dresses since they are a. conservative and b. can be worn with almost everything. I paired mine with my sandals and wore a scarf over it because it was sleeveless/backless; yes I was boiling :))

  • Loose Dress | Babouche: I also packed a couple of loose dresses. I wanted to match it with a pair of Babouche AKA Moroccan slippers. I was on a search for the perfect pair THE entire time I was in Marrakesh but didn’t find any that I liked. There is soo many pretty ones all over town but every time I tried them on they looked super awkward on me, so I decided to wait. Short loose dress with a pair of babouche is super cute though, especially if you add a cute headscarf.
  • Plain Tee | Capri Pants: Nothing special but a much-needed outfit. A simple tee and pair of capris are both comfy and convenient especially when you’re walking and exploring the city. I know capris sounds crazy as it’s way too hot for summer… Moroccan Summer that is but it wasn’t too bad.
